Title:
St. Bernadino Preaching in the Campo
Creator:
Sano di Pietro, painter
Description:
This image was part of a major campaign for the canonization of St. Bernardino. It was once a wing of a triptych, the central panel of which depicted an image of the saint ascending into heaven and the accompanying wing of which displayed another scene of the saint preaching. Here Bernardino stands before a throng of the faithful, the women separated from the men by a curtain . All kneel in devotion and look at the IHS tablet that Bernardino holds up. Bernardino supposedly designed a tablet much like this one in 1418 and would display it at the end of his sermons to musical fanfare.
