Title:
Meeting of Anne and Joachim at the Golden Gate
Creator:
Giotto di Bondone, painter
Description:
According to “The Golden Legend,” Joachim received a revelation in the wilderness concerning his wife, Anne, who was visited by an angel and told that she would bear a child—the Virgin. As they meet at the Golden Gate and kiss, their faces press together so closely that they seem to merge and form a third, completely different face, symbolizing the Immaculate Conception.
