Title:
St. Apollonia
Creator:
Piero della Francesca, painter, or workshop
Description:
According to the Golden Legend, Apollonia was a virginal older woman from Alexandria. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Decius, she was captured and tortured: her teeth were pulled from her mouth and the mob threatened her with death by fire if she refused to join them. Apollonia threw herself into the fire voluntarily. She is often depicted presenting her attribute, pincers holding a human tooth.
