Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: St. Agnes
  • Creator:
  • Description: Saint Agnes was a member of a Christian family of the Roman nobility. She was sentenced to death for refusing to marry the son of a prefect. Since Roman law did not permit the execution of virgins, she was raped beforehand. She miraculously remained a virgin. She was then to be burned at the stake, but the fire did not harm her. A soldier beheaded the 13-year-old Agnes as a last resort. Here Agnes is depicted in Byzantine imperial dress, standing in the fire that did not consume her.
