Title:
Dukatenkacker (“Ducat Shitter”)
Creator:
Description:
A nude man defecates gold coins. The building was the cloth merchants’ guildhall. Currently the façade displays a series of German emperors, but originally figures from classical mythology were located here. Today only two survive: Hercules and Abundantia. The Dukatenkacker is located directly below the figure of abundance. The coin-defecating motif developed in the early fourteenth century and signified concerns over usury stemming from the new money economy.
