Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: February
  • Creator: Herman, Jean, and Paul de Limbourg, painters
  • Description: A scene of wintry weather illustrates the calendar for February. Three peasants are out in the cold while in a farm house a finely dressed woman and two peasants sit before the fire. Michael Camille pointed out that these two peasants, a man and a woman, both expose their genitals before the fire. He argued that this explicit illustration was done at the request of the patron, Jean, duke of Berry.
