  • Description: The Virgin Mary served as a link between her son's sacramental body and the Christian community as his mystical body. Her iconography in later medieval art includes victories over Jews, seen as enemies of the host and the church. Mary is closely tied, as mother, to belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This belief is confirmed by stories of a baby seen in the host at mass. Images connected to this Marian theme appear frequently in books of hours, especially those made for women, whose concerns were focused on the family and the body. [Description supplied by Feminae.]
