The battles were distant, disengaging. But that was not true for the rest of the war story. From Kosova, people fled by the hundreds of thousands. Their homes were burned, the men were either killed or escaped to fight the Yugoslav military. They packed up as many possessions as they could carry and they walked. If they had them they used tractors or trucks. They had to get to the border to escape the Serb military. It was in their faces that the war became real: their grieving, their anxiety, their anguish -- broadcast for all the world to see.
