One view encouraged visions through guided meditation, with Newman citing Christina of Markyate and Mechthild of Hackeborn as examples. The other predominant view rejected visualization and questioned the source of visions. During the later Middle Ages theologians became increasingly concerned about the danger of cultivated visions, especially those of women like Bridget of Sweden and other lay people influenced by the pseudo-Bonaventuran "Meditations on the Life of Christ."
