Title : Gender and the Authority of Friars: The Significance of Holy Women for Thirteenth-Century Franciscans and Dominicans [In their letters and other writings, friars often reflected on their relationships with devout women. As preachers, friars exerted pastoral authority over devout women, but they also saw these particular women as having a privileged relationship with God. Although the friars admired the close relationship these women had with the divine, they also asserted their own distance and superiority over the women along the lines of gender difference. Title : La serva padrona Verdiana da Castelfiorentino is one of the few servants among the revered Tuscan holy women of the later Middle Ages. She, like Saint Zita, was part of a wave of migration from rural areas to the cities in Tuscany. These servant-saints displayed domestic virtues, like generosity; but they also went on pilgrimage.
