  • Abstract: Early medieval German texts contain only a few references to women's friendship. The "Sankt Trudperter Hohes Lied," an anonymous paraphrase and commentary on the "Song of Songs" written for religious women, supplies a welcome exception to the widespread silence on the topic. A close reading of passages that specifically mention friendship among women in an eleventh-century convent community sheds some light on the spiritual and communal lives of these women. Comparisons with other medieval writings underscore the unique nature of the text and its significance for the early history of women's friendship.
