Nichols reviews the contributions of five recent authors: Jody Enders, Suzannah Biernoff, Jeffrey Hamburger, R. Howard Bloch, and Daniel Heller-Roazen. All have made advances by refusing to adhere to the fixed boundaries drawn by previous scholarship. Of particular interest are works by Hamburger, discussing the agency nuns attained even when cloistered, and Bloch, describing the role of Marie de France in creating vernacular literature.
