Title:
Sarcophagus, detail, Suffering of Job and Temptation of Adam and Eve
Creator:
Description:
This detail from the Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus depicts Job sitting on the dunghill. His wife accompanies him and holds her garment to her nose due to the odor, and one of Job's comforters stands between them. In the scene to the right, separated by a classical column, Adam and Eve flank the Tree of Knowledge and cover their genitals with leaves. The serpent, which coils around the trunk, is now missing its head. A sheaf of wheat sits beside Adam's feet while a lamb stands by Eve. These items allude to the sacrifices that will be made to God by their sons, Cain and Abel, after the expulsion from Eden.
