Abstract:
This paper focuses on a significant yet little discussed aspect of Queen Tamar's patronage, the presence of fresco-icons in her family portraits. Fresco-icons, also known as painted icons, icons-within-icons, or fictive-icons, are found in monumental art of both Byzantium and the countries within the orbit of its influence.
