  • Abstract: This paper examines the material and textual evidence for women's role in the processes of burial and commemoration in Anglo-Saxon England. We intend to raise some general questions about the relationship between institutional and private memory, the material record of burial and commemoration at women's religious houses, and issues of difference between the way in which men and women participated in rituals of death and memory, before focusing on Anglo-Saxon Ely and the case of /Ethelthryth. What do we really know about her death'? And is it the woman herself whose memory is important to later writers like Bede and fEthelwold, or is it rather what she had come to represent about the Anglo-Saxon past'?
