Reputed founder and first abbess of Cell Dara in Kildare, Brigit is the female patron saint of Ireland. In addition to the numerous spellings of her name (including Brighid, Bríd, Bride, Bridget, and Brighid), she is often referred to as Brigid of Kildare to distinguish her from Bridget of Sweden.
