Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: Fibula with Bust of Woman's Head
  • Creator:
  • Description: This brooch likely belonged to a Langobard ruler. According to the Walters Art Museum, pearls once were strung on a wire that wove through the loops surrounding the enamel, and pendants would have hung from the three loops at the bottom. The figure depicted in the enamel center wears large earrings that hang pendulously. This work strongly recalls Byzantine imperial jewelry.
