Title:
Parting of Lot and Abraham
Creator:
Description:
As per the account in Genesis, Abraham and his nephew, Lot, choose opposite paths. Abraham chooses the road to Canaan and Lot leads his followers to Sodom. Lot's two daughters are at the head of his group while Isaac walks in front of Abraham. Lot's daughters serve to remind the viewer of the family's fate after the fall of Sodom, wherein Lot's daughters engage in intercourse with their father to preserve the family line. Though Isaac was not yet born at this point in the Genesis narrative, Christians saw Isaac as a prefiguration of Christ and his appearance here emphasizes the difference between Abraham and Lot.
