Title:
Small Maesta
Creator:
Lorenzetti, Ambrogio, painter
Description:
The enthroned Madonna and Christ Child sit in the midst of six angels. The Christ Child holds a scroll. The crowned and haloed woman on the left holds roses in her mantle, an attribute that marks her as St. Elizabeth of Hungary. The crowned and haloed woman on the right holds a palm and stands next to a great spiked wheel, an attribute that marks her as St. Catherine of Alexandria. Kneeling below the women are two haloed bishop-saints, and in front of them are two haloed pope-saints.
