Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: Portrait of Isabella of Portugal
  • Creator:
  • Description: Isabel of Portugal, wife of Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, wears a sumptuous dress and sits with her hands folded. Some scholars suggest that Isabella never sat for this specific image, but that the artist modeled it on a lost donor portrait by Rogier van der Weyden done for an altarpiece given to the Portugese monastery of Batalha . The inscription in the upper left corner that identifies the sitter with the Persian Sibyl, Persica Sibylla Ia, is thought to be a later addition to the work.
