Title:
Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude of Andechs
Creator:
Description:
The king and queen of Hungary, Andrew II and his wife Gertrude, each occupy an arcaded niche above the text for prayers. Both figures bear attributes common to depictions of queens and kings: Gertrude holds an open book, most likely a prayer book, and Andrew holds a scepter and wears a crown. Both figures lift a hand in speech, suggesting that they are depicted reciting the prayers that appear below them. They were the parents of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary.
