Notes

Rhetorical studies remain divided by the impulse toward globalization, represented by the rhetoric of inquiry movement, and the inclination to remain true to the classical tradition with its more restrictive focus on the discourses of the civic arena. Greatly complicating matters are issues of disciplinary legitimacy and centrality, including rhetoric’s relationships to cultural studies and to social-scientific studies of communication. Here I continue an exchange on these matters in the interests of advancing consideration of the issues. I offer an inclusive perspective on disciplinary identity and a globalist perspective on rhetoric itself. I acknowledge the importance of disciplinary consequences but argue, paradoxically, that arguments from disciplinary consequences are likely to be counterproductive.
