  • Abstract: This paper is an iconographical analysis of the mandrake fruit, its association with sexuality, and its therapeutically application in gynecological practices. The first part describes the presence of the mandrake in Egypt, the second part deals with the transmission of this specimen in Greek and Roman times, and the third part focuses on the Middle Ages. In that way, it is possible not only to understand the connections between Antiquity and the Middle Ages, but also to pay attention to the reinterpretation of scientific and artistic tradition throughout the Western history.
