  • Abstract: In Chrétien de Troyes' "Cligès" the empress Fénice, who was examined and tortured by the doctors of Salerno, escaped an untimely death by a women's revolution. In Western history such a revolution is not known. The author suggests a connection with the Byzantine world. In 1042 the exiled empress Zoe returned to Constantinople thanks to a revolution in which women played a major role. Western literary and intellectual circles in Constantinople, in Antioch and probably in France as well had access to a report of these events thanks to the Latin translation of a Greek chronicle.
