Title :
A Canterbury Lament [the author analyzes a petition (transcribed and translated in the Appendix) sent from prioresses and abbesses to the king complaining about the advantages their ecclesiastical guardians were taking of them, charging them unfair fees and forcing them to take in new nuns when they had neither the space nor the money for them; the author argues that the petition demonstrates how the nuns could appropriate both religious and non-religious discourse to try to remedy their situation].
