Jewish Women in the Medieval World: 500-1500 CE. Sarah Ifft Decker. Edited by Sarah Ifft Decker, translator of Document 20. Routledge, 2022. Pages 136 - 137.
Description:
The discussion concerns the need for a quorum of seven in reading the Torah. However, a man from the priestly lineage (
cohanim
) should not read following a first reader who is also a
cohen
because it calls into question a possible defect in that reader. Instead women should be called to complete the quorum.
