Lexical evidence suggests a well-established tradition of organized prostitution in Anglo-Saxon England, but there is little or no historical support for this assumption. In this paper, place-name evidence and literary references are surveyed in order to ascertain how widespread prostitution actually was before the Norman Conquest, and to detennine whether terms defmed as "prostitute" in dictionaries of the period can be understood in our modem sense of the word [Reproduced by permission of Robert Schicler, the “Abstracts of Papers in Anglo-Saxon Studies” editor, and the editors of the “Old English Newsletter.”].
