Abstract:
The area known as Claustrillas in the abbey of Las Huelgas, which was the first part built in the monastery, has generated a wide range of interpretations. In this article I suggest a new way to understand its functional purposes, considering the whole area as a part of the monastic infirmary. With the aim of setting the infirmary of Las Huelgas in a proper context, the first part of this study is dedicated to various general aspects about medieval infirmaries, including their liturgical customs and a list of their different premises.
