Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: Baptismal Procession of Charles VII
  • Creator:
  • Description: The infant Charles VII is carried to church by his godmother as ladies-in-waiting follow. Charles' godfather carries a candle and processes before the women. A child's godparents were the participants in the baptism, as the mother was required to stay in bed forty days until her public purification in church and the father was able only to attend. Families chose godparents for their children with careful deliberation. They allowed for the creation of a network of special connections which bound the families together with gift giving and mutual obligations.
