  • Abstract: This work focuses on the almsgiving practices of Countess Eleanor of Vermandois and Queen Blanche of Castile and how their patronage reflected both personal and pious considerations and those of their heirs, Philip Augustus and Louis IX respectively. The comparison is based on two very different and unusual sources—a treaty between Eleanor and her heir, Philip Augustus, and an account book for Blanche of Castile’s construction of the abbey of Maubuisson. A consideration of these two sources and these two women together can lead to additional conclusions that would not be possible if one looked only at Eleanor or Blanche. The concerns shown by their respective heirs about the alienation of income-producing properties provides a context for understanding mid-thirteenth-century notions about alienation of land into the mortmain of the church and gifts of limited amounts of rights to acquire such lands in grants of amortissement.
