Title:
Figures in a Rose Garden
Creator:
Description:
A lady stands between two courtiers against an expansive rose bush backdrop. The courtier to the left has removed his hat and appears to approach the lady, who holds out a plucked rose to him. Below this figure, at the bottom edge of the scene, is a monkey holding a cat--both animals are common medieval symbols of lust, the monkey representing unchecked passion and the cat a reference to female genitalia.
