Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

  • Title: Woman with a Pink
  • Creator: Memling, Hans, painter
  • Description: While often considered a portrait, this panel painting is one half of a two-panel work depicting an allegory of true love. The pink, or carnation held in the woman's hand, is a symbol of betrothal. The companion panel depicts two horses that are meant to represent two possible characteristics of the man in love: faithfulness and lustfulness. The lustful horse carries a monkey, often a symbol of untamed humanity.
