  • Abstract: From the outset, the nuns of the Cistercian Order followed in the footsteps of their brethren by heeding the word of their spiritual master, St. Bernard. The example of the Flemish and Liégeois Cistercian nuns allows one to trace the spiritual itinerary of the sisters from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. The path leads from a nuptial mysticism (Christ as bridegroom) coupled with a Christocentric devotion, both of which are drawn from the works of the abbot of Clairvaux, to modern forms of expression of religious sentiment introduced into the Cistercian cloisters by the Society of Jesus at the time of the Reformation. This opening out toward other schools of spirituality did not cut these religious off from their own Order which continued to provide the perfect framework for the realization of their personal monastic ideal.
