  • Title: Contained Conlict: Wild Men and Warrior Women in the Early Italian Epic [The author explores the figure of the Amazon in several Italian epics including "L'Aspramonte" and "Cantare d'Aspramonte" and the epics concerning Rinaldo da Montalbano. The author argues that the Italian epic writers figured Amazons and wild men as the Other (frequently literally for the women since they were often identified as Saracens) who were ultimately defeated by noble knights. The author argues that this theme was connected to social anxieties since the Italian elites needed to reiterate their superiority over all other social groups because they no longer performed the role of mounted knights.
