Title:
Il monachesimo femminile benedettino nell' Italia nord-occidentale (secc. Xi-xiii) [To the end of the thirteenth century, most aspects of monasticism, male or female, remained substantially similar. The women's monasteries of northwest Italy, many of them inside cities, tended to be controlled by powerful families, noble or patrician, who tended to provide both the abbesses and the lay managers of their patrimony. These monasteries took part in urban expansion and the exploitation of rural districts. Strict monastic enclosure, imposed late in the Middle Ages, reduced the importance of these ties with urban life and politics].
